Orillia 4H Calf Club
A Long-Standing Partnership with the Orillia 4-H Calf Club
The Kiwanis Club of Orillia has a long history of supporting local agriculture and the young people who help shape its future. That relationship dates back to the 1920s, when Kiwanians and members of the farming community regularly gathered for community banquets celebrating their shared commitment to Orillia.
In 1950, that connection grew even stronger with the formation of the Orillia 4-H Calf Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Orillia. More than 75 years later, we are proud to continue supporting the club and recognizing the achievements of its members.
Each December, Kiwanis hosts 4-H members and their families for a luncheon where awards and prizes are presented to celebrate the year's accomplishments. In return, the 4-H Club welcomes Kiwanis members to an annual fall corn roast at a local farm, continuing a tradition of friendship and community that has endured for generations.
Current Kiwanian John Mayo has helped coordinate this partnership since 2006, carrying on the work of longtime Kiwanian and veterinarian Larry Booth. Over the years, the annual barbecue has been hosted by local farm families, most recently alternating between Big Curve Acres in Oro-Medonte and Hewitt Fun Farm in Severn.
The success of the Orillia 4-H Calf Club is also a reflection of the exceptional leadership of Kevin Moore, who has guided the club for nearly four decades. In recognition of his outstanding dedication to local youth and agriculture, the Kiwanis Club of Orillia presented him with the Mel Osborne Fellowship in 2011.
One of the highlights of the annual December luncheon is a friendly challenge for Kiwanis members to "learn something new about farming." It's a reminder that today's 4-H members are knowledgeable, skilled, and passionate about agriculture and the future of farming.
The Kiwanis Club of Orillia is honoured to support the Orillia 4-H Calf Club and the next generation of agricultural leaders. Together, we continue a partnership rooted in service, learning, and community.
